Certified raw material

Picture of a Swedish forestSetra annually purchases approx 4 million m3 saw timber, all of which meets the demands for controlled raw material stipulated by FSC and PEFC. In 2010, 48 percent of the raw material bought were certified by either of the two certification systems.

The raw material is made up of pine (Pinus sylvestri) and spruce (Picea abies) and originates mainly from the areas sourunding Setras sawmills in order to avoid long transports. There is also a marginal import from Finland, in 2010 it amounted to 2.0%.

Responsible suppliers
Setra’s timber raw material suppliers are mainly Sveaskog and Skogsägarna Mellanskog. Sveaskog’s entire forest holdings are certified according to the Swedish FSC rules, and a substantial part of the land owned by members of Skogsägarna Mellanskog is certified according to PEFC. Both Sveaskog and Mellanskog are Chain of Custody certified towards FSC and PEFC.

FSC, Forest Stewardship Council, is an international, independent, non-profit organisation that certifies forestry that meets set social, ecological and economic requirements.Certification requirements include respect for the legal or established rights of indigenous peoples, conservation of biodiversity and cultural values, protection of local social and economic interests, and management of the forests so that they can be utilized for other purposes than timber extraction alone.

PEFC, Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is also an international system for certification, primarily of family forest management. PEFC certification means that the raw material comes from sustainable forestry which is environmentally sound, ecologically appropriate and socially responsible.
