Carbon Footprint

"Calculations show that wood stores the equivalent of 800 kg of carbon dioxide per cubic meter of sawn timber. Carbon dioxide emissions in the life cycle, ie from planting to transportation to the average customer in Sweden, is also 59 kg. The use of wood for construction and housing provides a lock-in effect of 741 kg carbon dioxide per cubic meter of sawn timber. "

-Setra's Sustainability Report

Most of Setra greenhouse gas emissions originate from the transport chain. But wood binds carbon and benefits of using wood for construction and housing far exceeds the product release from a life cycle perspective.

Greenhouse Gases

Setra is working in several ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. One important areais to improve energy efficiency in our own operations. Another is to improve the efficiency of our transportations, timber transportation to the facilities and the transport of timber and bio-products to customers. Even in our sales process we want to increase the use of wood.

Goals to Reduce Electricity Consumption by 20%

By replacing building materials such as steel and concrete with wood, there is a storage of carbon instead of carbon emissions. Setra's greenhouse gas emissions from its own operations accounted for 6 percent of total emissions in 2016. Electricity used accounted for 20 percent. Setra's goal is to reduce electricity consumption by 20 percent and diesel consumption by 15 percent, measured per cubic meter of sawn timber by 2020, with 2010 as the base year. This represents a decrease of approximately 6 kilograms of carbon dioxide per cubic meter of sawn timber. Until 2016 the specific emissions fell by more than 2 kilos.

Smart Logistics Solutions Reduce Emissions

Emissions in Setra's transport chain accounted for 73 percent of total emissions in 2016. By increasing the share of rail transport of timber to sawmills, set requirements for the transport contracts and choosing wisely, logistics emissions can be reduced. In the autumn of 2015 there was a dialogue with some of our major carriers, including the aim of developing cooperation on climate change. We have revised our guidelines for company cars and stricter requirements for emissions when buying new cars.

What We Are Doing to Reduce Emissions

The goal of reduced emissions will be achieved through the following activities:

• Energy mapping of all sawmills and processing units. Through the installation of the measuring points, consumption will be followed in time. More knowledge about electricity consumption leads to better measures and decisions

• Replacement of the control system for a more energy-efficient control of the drying process

• Improved logistics in the timber field, and in warehouses with finished products, through the warehouse management system

• Increased cooperation with carriers for efficient logistics

• Using diesel fuel mixed with renewable fuels, for example the HVO, in our machines
