Packaging and the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR)
Since August 2026, the EU Regulation on packaging and packaging waste (Regulation (EU) 2025/40), commonly known as the PPWR, has applied. The regulation sets new requirements for all packaging placed on the European market – including which substances packaging may contain, how it must be designed to enable recycling, and how the amount of material must be minimised to what is actually needed.
Setra’s role
Setra Trävaror AB is the producer and manufacturer of the packaging used to protect and hold together our wood products – sawn timber, planed timber, cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (glulam) – during transport and storage. This means we are responsible for ensuring that our packaging meets the requirements of the PPWR, that we are registered for extended producer responsibility, and that we can provide documentation demonstrating this.
About our packaging
Our wood products are packaged using plastic film, plastic hoods, plastic strapping and labels. These materials are used to protect the products from moisture and damage, and to hold bundles and packages securely together during handling and transport.
We continuously assess and document our packaging against the requirements of the regulation, including material choice, recyclability and material minimisation, and we update our documentation as the European Commission finalises its supporting rules (implementing acts and harmonised standards).
Sweden’s status at a glance
Sweden is currently in an implementation phase, with national rules being progressively aligned with the regulation. At the same time, work is ongoing within the EU on guidance and supplementary rules to support companies in applying the requirements.
